Even after thorough tests and reviews, final products released in the market can still encounter unprecedented issues. The same is true for Windows 10. When Microsoft released v1809 in October, complaints coming from users started to spring up like mushrooms. Many reported several problems, including disappearing User files, among others. These issues were so serious that Microsoft decided to recall the Update.
We wouldn’t be surprised if you asked, “Should I manually check for Windows 10 Updates or just wait for Microsoft to offer them to me?”

Finally, Microsoft Releases the Patches!
Microsoft seems to have released the patches for everything, and everyone can finally install the Windows 10 v1809 Update. If you know how to manually check for Windows updates, you understand that clicking the Check for Updates button via the Settings app is all you need to do to start the download process. As of December 17, 2018, the rollout status says:
“Windows 10, version 1809, is now fully available for advanced users who manually select ‘Check for updates’ via Windows Update.”
Of course, many users were alarmed when they read that the version 1809 is available for ‘advanced users.’ So, a lot of Windows 10 users opted to wait for Microsoft to offer the update. After all, the Check for Update button has been notorious for causing so many problems in the past.
Last month, Microsoft discussed three types of Windows Updates—B, C, and D. In general:
- B updates are rolled out in the second week of the month.
- C updates are rolled out in the third week of the month.
- D updates are rolled out in the fourth week of the month.
B Windows Updates
Also referred to as Patch Tuesday, B Windows Updates go through various programs, including the Security Update Validation Program and Windows Insiders Program, among others. B releases come in two forms:
- One that is available on the public domain via the Depth Test Pass, Pre-Release Validation Program, Monthly Test Pass, Security Update Validation Program, and the Windows Insider Program.
- The other one is available via an invite-only program. This channel allows them to thoroughly review the results of their security fixes in their labs before they officially release the B Windows Updates.
C and D Windows Updates
Advanced users and commercial clients who want to install the latest updates as soon as possible can access the C and D Windows Updates. Microsoft states clearly that these releases are intended to give more insight into the impact of non-security fixes by allowing consenting users to test them.
Now, you need to know that anyone can download these updates. All you need to do is open the Settings app, select Update & Security, then click the Check for Updates button under Windows Update. In other words, by clicking this button, you will become a tester of the C and D Updates.
Issues on the Windows 10 v1809 Updates
Thankfully, Microsoft has decided to become more transparent about the problems surrounding the latest Windows update. By checking v1809’s update history on Microsoft’s site, you will be able to see the previous and current issues associated with it. Unfortunately, there are still many items marked as ‘Upgrade block in place’. If the problem has this tag, it means that Microsoft has not resolved it successfully yet.
How to Install Windows 10 Updates Wisely
Keep in mind that when you click the ‘Check for updates’ button, you will install Windows updates that are still riddled with undiscovered issues. As such, if you are not an advanced Windows 10 user, we recommend waiting for Microsoft to offer the updates to your system. This is the only time wherein you can rest easy knowing that the system is completely stable.
