Just make sure to follow our instructions carefully since the tricks involved require precision and accuracy.

What is Windows 10 Mixed Reality?

Mixed Reality, also known as Windows Holographic, is a built-in Windows 10 feature that enables users to enjoy virtual reality experiences. Equipped with a compatible hardware rig, you can dive right in and explore mixed reality – a virtual environment where you can interact with both the real world and virtual objects. You can use this amazing platform for gaming, streaming, studying, having fun with friends, and many other purposes. Mixed Reality is easy to set up and navigate, and yet many users consider it useless. If you are one of the lot, keep reading to see how to get rid of the thing.

How to remove Windows 10 Mixed Reality?

If you do not have compatible hardware or a dedicated headset or your PC doesn’t meet the minimum hardware requirements, chances are you neither need nor use this feature. In a case like this, you are better off removing it altogether.

  • Remove Mixed Reality via Settings

The easiest method of doing away with the feature is by removing it from the Settings program. Here is what you should do:

  1. Press the Windows key + I combo to open the Settings app.
  2. Click on Mixed Reality.
  3. In the right pane, move down to Uninstall and click it.
  4. Once on the Uninstall screen, click the Uninstall button.

Unfortunately, Mixed Reality is not always available on the Settings page, which means you have to perform certain registry edits to get things done. Below are all the necessary instructions.

  • Modify your Windows Registry settings

This is where you should be extremely cautious. Windows Registry is one of the most fragile system components, so there is no room for error when editing it. Precautions are necessary here, so let’s back up the entire database:

  1. Open Search, type ‘regedit’ (no quotes are needed) and hit Enter.
  2. Once in Registry Editor, navigate to the left pane and right-click on Computer.
  3. Click Export, name your backup and save it to a safe location.

Now let’s enable Mixed Reality to appear in Settings:

  1. In the Registry Editor app, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Holographic.
  2. You’ll see FirstRunSucceeded on the right side of the page. If you don’t see the thing, create a new 32-bit DWORD value and name it FirstRunSucceeded.
  3. Double-click it and set its value to 1.
  4. Save the changes and exit Registry Editor.
  5. Restart your computer.

Now open the Settings app (the Mixed Reality icon should be there) and repeat the steps outlined in the first solution.

  • Delete certain keys from Windows Registry

This is another Windows Registry trick, so make sure to proceed with caution (we hope you have already backed up your Windows Registry):

  1. Open Registry Editor (see the instructions on how to do this above).
  2. Navigate to  HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionHolographic and delete FirstRunSucceeded.
  3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionHolographicSpeechAndAudio and remove PreferDesktopSpeaker and PreferDesktopMic.
  4. Now proceed to remove DisableSpeechInput from HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftSpeech_OneCoreSettingsHolographic.
  5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPerceptionSimulationExtensions and delete DeviceId and Mode.
  6. Now open the File Explorer app and go to C:Users{username}AppDataLocalPackagesMicrosoft.Windows.HolographicFirstRun_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalState. Remove the RoomBounds.json file from there.
  7. Now go to C:\ProgramData\WindowsHolographicDevices. Open the SpatialStore folder and delete its contents.
  8. Open Search and type PowerShell.
  9. Right-click PowerShell. Select Run as administrator.
  10. Now type the following: Dism /online /Get-Capabilities.
  11. Press Enter to run the command.

Once you are done, restart your PC. Mixed Reality is here no more.

Tip: We assume you frequently remove unneeded apps, features and files from your computer. That’s a healthy habit indeed since cluttering one’s OS is totally undesirable. We recommend that you go a step further and make sure there are no software leftovers, junk files, or orphaned entries in your system. To do that, you might need a helpful tool like Auslogics BoostSpeed: this handy software will clean up your Windows, skyrocket its performance and secure your sensitive data so that you can rest easy knowing that your operating system is in its best state.
